Levellers have announced a string of dates across the North of Scotland and the Highlands & Islands this July with shows in Aberdeen, Wick, Orkney and Shetland.

The folk rockers celebrated 25 years in the ‘business’ in 2013 and we’ve been told that there are plans in the pipeline for a new album and a film in the coming year or so.

The band released their tenth studio album Static On The Airwaves in 2012, this was the second produced by Sean Lakeman and received positive reviews from critics with Classic Rock saying, “The Levellers album to silence the critics and repay the faithful is here – tune in. 8/10” and the Daily Mirror gave it 4/5  “This affirmative and emboldened revival by the alt rock rebels is a career best

This set of gigs should be the perfect warm up for their Headline gig at the Heb Celt festival in Stornoway, the folk rabble-rousers are bound to bring their fabled incendiary live show and the chance to see them in a more intimate setting is one that you’d be daft to miss. This writer saw them live on a number of occasions through the nineties and if they’re even half as good now as they were back then, audiences should be in for a real treat.

Levellers have long been and still are, one of the best live bands around but often overlooked is their impressive back catalogue of recorded music. The Levellers sold more platinum, gold, and silver albums in the 1990s than any other act. Their platinum-selling 1991 album Levelling The Land, which is widely regarded as an absolute classic, features hits including One Way, Riverflow, The Game, Far From Home and Liberty Song.

Dreadlocks and a dog on a string definitely not required!

I’ve always loved music and spent my late teens and early twenties playing guitar in various bands on Lewis and Aberdeen. Other than playing in some truly terrifying pubs in Aberdeen not much came of it and life became focused on family and having a ‘proper’ job.

Inverness Gigs is an outlet for me to quell my inner frustrated musician and the caliber of local acts has even inspired me to take my own music more seriously again. Who knows, one day I might venture back on stage under the fierce scrutiny of an Inverness Gigs reviewer!
