Shutter at Ceol-Mor
It’s birthday time at Ceol-Mor, as they celebrate their first anniversary firstly with a new comedy club, Stand Out Stand Up on the 28th of January, and secondly, Shutter on Saturday Jan. 29th. This marks the first time the band have played at Ceol-Mor and whilst also marking the start of a short tour which see Shutter visit the isles of Lewis, Harris and Benbecula.
Shutter have been racking up the plaudits, especially in the last year. The band consists of Pete Macdonald (Guitar), James Robertson (bass), William Robertson (drums) and Matt Campbell (guitar). They have had two well-received EPs in and memorably noted for their live show presentation Shutter, winners of Best Contemporary Band at the 2010 ICA Awards and also notably find their self released debut album “Pillars” selected as one of his Vic Galloway Top 75 Albums of 2010, Ceol-Mor happily welcomes back the Highlands purveyors of the sonic embrace at the end of January
Having launched the Pillars album in the Ironworks to decent critical acclaim and in a stage set that was probably unanticipated by their audience, the album is best described in their own words citing “themes of space and capturing the atmospheric instrumental beauty jumping between light and shade with innovative use of dynamics”; To this correspondent’s ear, the album moves between and unsparing, sinfully lush noises of head filling darkness which are balanced by the other EP tracks which are evidently more ethereal and subtle compositions in what is an ambitious overall concept that achieves what was intended by the band.
Though not necessarily a natural fit, Shutter were participants at the 2008 Celtic Connections showcasing Scottish contemporary music and just to keep up the diversity theme, they played the soundtrack to accompany the the annual Inverness Guy Fawkes night display and played an 18 minute set. With a CV that notes Rockness, T in the Park and Belladrum, there is little question at all that this gig at Ceol Mor is one for the diary for the local live music fan.
A note on their latest blog notes that there is an intention to film the next few dates that they are playing around the Highlands that will be released later in the year – iGiGs looks forward to this and more from Shutter this year.
Please note that the support have yet to be announced….
