We were lucky to be able to catch up with Megan Blyth prior to her forthcoming Belladrum appearance.
This is Megan’s second Belladrum, after her debut at the HEN stage last year, a year which has seen her profile rise quite significantly. For Megan the highlight was supporting The Whisky River Band at their recent album launch “I felt really honoured that they asked me to be a part of their night and it was just lovely to see how many people came to support local music”. Other highlights for Megan were releasing her debut EP and playing the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
It’s fair to say that Megan is looking forward to her appearance at the Seedling stage, describing feeling excited at playing at the festival and humbled at being on the bill. Megan’s list of acts that she is going to see include Iain McLaughlin and the Outsiders, The Whisky River Band, The Little Mill of Happiness, Foy Vance and Brown Bear & the Bandits. Not forgetting Barry Mackay & Ryan Golder who are playing the HEN stage. She makes no qualms about the quality of the line-up “there’s a huge list of artists this year, I feel the line up is probably the best it’s ever been with so much great local talent playing”.
It is Megan’s most recent composition that she is looking forward to playing most, “Bring Me Down”, when she takes to the stage. Whilst she is always enjoys playing new songs in her set she describes “Bring Me Down” as “a lot more ballsy than the songs I’ve written before”. You may see a little bit of promotion prior to the gig: “The strategy I used last year worked pretty well – get a couple of my mates to hand out leaflets around the campsites”. However she also identified how important it was to engage with the audience and get out and meet new folk.
After Bella, Megan will be playing Scottish Fantasia in Edinburgh accompanied by the Whisky River Band on the 19th of August. Later on in August she will be playing the Colne Rythm & Blues Festival, joining the likes of Joan Armatrading on the bill. She is also hoping to find some time to record a second Ep , after the debut sold out of physical copies (a release on iTunes is imminent).
Megan is on the Seedling stage at Belladrum 2012 on Friday at 4.25pm.
