A brief review of the open mic at The Eagle, Inverness on the 6th of March.

Its the first Tuesday of the month, and the newest venue in town The Eagle was hosting its regular open mic evening. Not too busy due to a certain football match involving the green half of Glasgow, however, the small crowd that were there, were entertained by host Dougie Burns, Sarah Williamson and my lot ‘All The Colors’.

Local bluesman Dougie as ever played a group of original stomping tunes filled with a range of emotions, but it was the young Sarah that particularly caught my ear tonight.

Understandably, she was filled with apprehension and nerves as I think this could have been her first exposure to a live audience and she apologised for that even though there was no need in a room full of likeminded musicians.

Her songs are a bit rough round the edges as with her performances but only in the respect that there could potentially be a diamond set amongst that rough exterior. Two songs that really stood out for me were ‘Loser’ and ‘Jealousy’ which were two self-confessed angst driven numbers that were set with self pity but splattered with humour, fun and personality.

It turns out she has a three piece band called Shaped that in her words are a ‘bit punky poppy’. If they are anything like Sarah solo I think they could be an exciting little prospect.

Sarah Williamson, definitely one to watch out for in the future.

Of course there are a few opportunities for open mics out there see some opportunities here.
