As Carnival Fifty Six looms forward, we have a look at the lure of the Dundee festival
For those suffering from post Belladrum blues or wished they were there and not watching it on BBC Alba there is an opportunity to revive your senses as this weekend, 12/13 August, sees the inaugural Carnival Fifty Six. Described as Dundee’s biggest music event in a decade it’s only a drive down the A9 and a left turn at Perth it’s set in the open spaces of Camperdown Park.
Carnival Fifty Six is a city based festival with a range of stages with a wide variety of acts, similar to TRNSMT it is a non-camping festival but there are shuttle buses in the city centre where there is plenty of parking. As well as top notch headliners local acts feature prominently on the bill with Dundee a city which punches above its weight when it comes to quality musicianship.
On Saturday, the Mardi Gras Stage sees Mark Ronson of ‘Uptown Funk’ fame headline with support from those Chelsea Daggers ,The Fratellis and also in there are Honeyblood who delivered in the rain at Belladrum last week. The Festival House Big Top Tent has DJ sets from Basement Jaxx and Hot Chip. Jam Live has Prides, Sinderins and the legend that is Jesse Rae!
The Discovery Stage mixes music and comedy with Billy Kirkwood the compere for the comedy and music provided by some of favourites including Model Aeroplanes, Tijuana Bibles and Miracle Glass Company.
Sunday brings chart topping drum and bass band Rudimental to the Mardi Gras Stage with the ever popular, and resurgent, The Charlatans and one time Rockness regulars, The Cuban Brothers. Sasha and James Zabiela are the main draws in the Festival House Big Top. Meanwhile popular Dundonians The Law and The Kyle Falconer Band feature at Jam Live while Matt Richardson hosts the comedy at the Discovery stage while the Mirror Trap and Crash Club provide the top of the bill on the music side.
The Red Bull Truck and The Treehouse provide further dance stages with an array of acts on both days.
The festival promises to deliver two days of top entertainment in a city park environment. For further details and tickets go to www.carnivalfiftysix.co.uk.
